Maine Coon Kitten Checklist

Everything You Need Before Your New Kitten Comes Home

Are you welcoming your first Maine Coon kitten home? Preparing in advance isn't just about convenience — it directly affects your kitten's health, emotional wellbeing, and how smoothly they settle into their new life with you.Maine Coons are known for their gentle nature and impressive size, but they are also emotionally sensitive cats. Moving from a familiar cattery to a new home can be stressful without the right preparation.

We've been raising Maine Coons in Nonthaburi for over 11 years — home-raised, no cages, and in 2025 our cats placed in Thailand's Top 4 WCF National Rankings. This checklist is exactly what we send every family before their kitten comes home.

Why Preparing in Advance Matters

4 Key Reasons to Prepare Before Pickup Day

1. Reduces Stress and Confusion

A well-prepared home helps your kitten feel safe and secure from the moment they arrive — no searching for a familiar litter box, food bowl, or resting spot.

2. Supports Digestion and Immunity

Sudden changes in food or environment can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, or loss of appetite. Keeping the same diet and routine helps prevent these issues.

3. Builds Good Habits from Day One

When your kitten knows where to eat, sleep, and play, they settle faster and are less likely to toilet in the wrong place or scratch furniture.

4. Strengthens the Bond Between You and Your Kitten

A calm, safe environment helps your kitten trust you faster — a peaceful beginning means a stronger, more lasting relationship.

At least 2 weeks before your kitten's move-in day, TigerCoonCat will send you a full list of the food and essentials your kitten has been raised on, so you can prepare in advance.

Premium Nutrition for Maine Coon Kittens — What Your Kitten Eats at TigerCoonCat

Every product recommended in this guide is what we actually feed and use with our cats at TigerCoonCat — tested over 11 years of raising champion Maine Coons

The most important rule in the first month: do not change your kitten's food immediately. We recommend keeping the same diet for at least the first month before gradually transitioning to anything new.

Dry Food — Primary Diet for Maine Coon Kittens

Essential Tip for Choosing Maine Coon Kibble: To support the rapid growth and massive bone structure of this giant breed, it is highly recommended to choose formulas with a minimum of 36% crude protein. Most importantly, the food must be free from poultry or animal by-products to ensure your kitten receives only premium, high-quality protein from real meat, safeguarding their long-term health and wellbeing.

Aligning with these high nutritional standards, our Maine Coon cattery in Thailand carefully selects only the finest options for our growing kittens. As a dedicated Maine Coon breeder, we recommend choosing one of the following premium formulas — both of which are trusted and everyday main kibbles used here at TigerCoonCat:

Tip: Stock up before pickup day to avoid running out during the adjustment period.

Wet Food — Supplemental

Look for wet food with these qualities:

  • Labelled "Complete & Balanced"
  • Low sodium — to protect kidney health
  • Free from preservatives, artificial colours, or flavours
  • Made with high-quality meat as the primary ingredient

Recommended Brands:

Recommended Portions:

AgeAmount
2–6 months½–1 pouch/can per day, split morning & evening
6 months and older1–2 pouches/cans per day, split morning & evening

Wet food should complement dry food — not replace it entirely.

Raw Food (BARF)

We do not recommend preparing BARF at home — even thoroughly cleaned raw ingredients can carry contamination risks. We recommend trusted ready-made brands instead.Recommended Brands:

Choose either BARF or wet food — do not feed both at the same time.

Maine Coon Litter Box Setup — Size, Litter & What We Use at the Cattery

Large open-top litter boxes used at TigerCoonCat cattery — ideal setup for Maine Coon cats Thailand

Maine Coons grow to be large cats — a litter box that's too small will cause discomfort and may lead to accidents outside the box.

Litter Box Size

  • At least 60 cm wide
  • High sides
  • Open-top — no lid — Maine Coons need room to move comfortably

Recommended Litter

  • Tofu Cat Litter — Yoyo Pet Brand — 99% dust-free, water-soluble, excellent odour control. We use the pellet/stick type at the cattery and highly recommend it. 🛒 Buy on Shopee — click here

Premium Set We Recommend

  • Nyantomo Clean Toilet Set — a double-layer system with a special odourless litter formula. The first purchase must be the full set. After that, you can buy the litter and liner pads separately — much more economical long-term. ✨ We use this at the cattery and can confirm — absolutely no odour. 🛒 Buy on Shopee — click here

Essential Supplies for Maine Coon Kittens — Bowls, Water & Cat Trees

  • Tilted ceramic bowls with bamboo stand — supports digestion and reduces neck strain
  • Stainless steel bowls with adjustable height — grows with your Maine Coon

Heavy-Duty Solid Wood Cat Trees

Maine Coon kittens on solid wood cat tree — TigerCoonCat Nonthaburi Thailand

Most cat trees sold online are designed for average domestic cats — not for a Maine Coon male that can reach 8 -13 kg at full maturity. Our Maine Coon cats need solid wood structures that can handle their size, weight, and natural climbing instincts safely. We strongly recommend purchasing a solid wood cat tree made in Thailand rather than imported plastic or compressed-wood alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I prepare?

We recommend at least 2 weeks before pickup day. TigerCoonCat will send you a full list of your kitten's food and essentials in advance.

Can I switch food straight away?

We don't recommend it. Please use the same food for at least the first month, then transition gradually.

What size litter box do I need?

At least 60 cm wide. Maine Coons are large cats — a small box will make them uncomfortable.

Where can I buy a cat tree?

We recommend reaching out to us first — most options on Shopee aren't sturdy enough for a Maine Coon.

How do I contact TigerCoonCat?

WhatsApp or Line — we're always happy to help.

Even if your kitten isn't from TigerCoonCat, feel free to use this checklist as your guide — just remember to ask your breeder about the specific food and routine your kitten has been raised on, as every cattery is different.
